Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month 2016

img_2280

SEI has wrapped up its September of teal to help spread awareness for Ovarian Cancer. We’d like to thank everyone who participated and close this month with some of our Teal Thursday photos and quick facts about ovarian cancer From bethedifference.org As with all cancers, early detection of ovarian cancer is key to survival. When diagnosed early, ovarian cancer patients have a 90% chance of survival. Although a reliable, routine early detection tool currently does not exist to test for ovarian cancer (like a mammogram for breast cancer or a Pap test for cervical cancer), there are several tests for women who are considered “high risk”. If a woman has a family history of ovarian cancer, a BRCA gene mutation or is experiencing symptoms consistent to that of ovarian cancer, her doctor may monitor her using a combination of tests that you can find at bethedifference.org Know the symptoms:     Abdominal Bloating     Feeling full quickly while eating     Pelvic or abdominal pain or pressure     Urinary urgency or frequency     Changes in bowel habits     Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge     Back pain     Unexplained weight gain or loss Here at SEI we want to help spread the word so more women can learn about their risk and take action. Thank you for all those who participated in our September month of teal and remember together we can make a difference!

North TX Giving Day

North-Texas-Giving-Day-Stuff-the-Box-For-Jonathan's-Place

North Texas Giving Day was a rousing success for the community! Not only did the people of North Texas raise a ton of money, over 37 million, for local charities, here at SEI we ran a Needs List drive for the amazing kids down at Jonathan’s Place. We collected everything from paper towels and cleaning supplies to towels and jammies. In the end, our box was overflowing with good stuff that the kids, and staff, could really use. In addition, we donated 40 myCloud memory foam pillows, one for each bed at the facility! Christi and Jamie took the goods down to the JPKids campus, with the truck loaded down until it nearly burst. Can’t wait to see what we come up with next year…

Teal Toes 2016

SEI-Teal-Toes-Pedi-Party

Here at  SEI, we love a good party. And a pedi party? You bet. And for a good cause? Even better. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and in support of the Be the Difference Foundation, we turn the whole office teal, starting with our toes! Even the gents get involved, painting their toes and spreading awareness. While the party is fun, and kicks off Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month with a bang, we definitely remember why we’re turning the town teal. To spread awareness about this deadly disease. Facebook, twitter, and instagram are the chosen channels to spread the word, and we encourage sharing with friends and family. Want to get involved? Paint your toes and tag your social posts with #SEITealtoes – you’ll be entered into a giveaway for an amazing piece of wall art!

Wheel To Survive 2016

Wheel-to-Survive
Our third Wheel to Survive was a huge success! As the hours flew by each team member took their turn spinning for research, sweating for awareness, and fighting for all those lost to ovarian cancer. It takes a team to get through this 6 hour cycling event and a community to fight this disease. Afterwards, we walked away tired, sore and happy that we have the opportunity to participate in this amazing event dedicated to changing the way our society combats ovarian cancer. We successfully raised over $14,000 for Be The Difference Foundation and want to thank every single rider, contributor, and SEI Cares supporter. Together we can make a difference!

Teal Toes Pedi Party 2015
Once again, September was full of spirit for the SEI Cares team during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. We started strong with a Teal Toes Pedi Party at the office! Did you know? In 2016, nearly 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and about 15,000 will die from the disease. Did you know? Ovarian cancers strikes 1 in 72 women. Our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, and colleagues all deserve better. Know the signs. Spread awareness. Be the difference.

SEI Cares Summer Picnic

Jonathans_Place_Picnic-2015-01Final

Each June, despite the heat and humidity, all of Southern Enterprises’ employees gather at Wagon Wheel Park in Coppell, TX for burgers, sno-cones, and games.  During this annual picnic, the SEI Cares committee hosts a group of children and staff members from Jonathan’s Place.  We are so happy to be able to provide a much-needed day of fun for this very deserving group!  It’s hard to tell which activity was the overall favorite, but water balloons are always a huge hit with the kiddos, and with the high temps we get here in North Texas, the adults don’t seem to mind them so much either! The mission of Jonathan’s Place is to provide a safe, loving home to children in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex who have been abused, abandoned or neglected.  They also have programs for foster care and adoption, and work with the Safe Place national youth outreach program.  For more information on this wonderful organization, please visit jpkids.org. Thank you to all of the committee members and SEI employees that made this event happen!

At our second spin at Wheel To Survive, the SEI Cares team cycled with ferocity, many riders relaying 2 hours or more! Wheel To Survive Dallas is an uplifting, 6-hour indoor cycle event benefiting the Be the Difference Foundation, which battles ovarian cancer through research dollars and support. Why do we ride? For Helen. For every mother, sister, daughter, coworker, friend. We ride to be the difference. SEI Cares raised over $17,000! To our contributors and supporters along the way, you are why we ride! THANK YOU!

SEI Cares 2014 Highlights

2014 DSG Buddy Walk - Southern Enterprises

During its inaugural year, the SEI Cares committee participated in several events to support our house charities! In total, the committee raised over $75,000 and donated countless volunteer hours to assist these four very important causes in 2014!  Here is a recap of some of our achievements and highlights from 2014. Be The Difference Foundation A total of 15 SEI employees rode in the 2014 Wheel to Survive event, an indoor cycling fundraiser that supports programs for women battling ovarian cancer.  Some of the team breezed through the ride, and for some of us it was a definite challenge, but the experience was so uplifting and inspiring! We also raised contributions for BTDF at two sample sales, one in the spring and one in the fall. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and the official color for ovarian cancer awareness is teal.  The team helped to raise awareness by painting their toes teal and sharing pedi pics with the hashtag #SEITealToes through social media.  We also participated in Ring in the Cure, an awareness campaign where the team wore flashing teal rings to encourage others to ask what they were for – a perfect opportunity to spread awareness to our community about ovarian cancer. SEI’s CEO Michael Horowitz, aka “Ironman Mike”, competed in the Ironman Arizona: a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run.  He raised several thousand dollars for his Ironman in support of the Be The Difference Foundation!  Click here for more information on Mike’s Journey to the Ironman. SEI Teal Toes Pedi Party - Ovarian Cancer Awareness

The SEI Cares crew went Toe-tally Teal this September for National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month!  We kicked off September with an office Pedi Party, and all of our employees were invited to join in on the fun! Why teal toes?  Teal is the Ovarian Cancer Awareness color, and it is most definitely eye-catching!  Many of our pedi party-goers have had someone comment on how pretty their toe color was – a perfect opportunity to tell someone what that teal stands for! Once our toes were dry, we shared them on our social media accounts and even encouraged our fans to share theirs too by offering an incentive.   For each teal toes picture shared with the hashtag #SEITealToes, SEI will donate $1 to Be the Difference Foundation.  On top of that, each person that shared their toes is entered to win a super cute teal writing desk! Another way we got the word out about ovarian cancer is by participating in Ring in the Cure with Be the Difference Foundation and Medical City Dallas Hospital.  On Friday, September 12th we each wore a large, light-up teal ring everywhere we went.  It definitely got the conversation rolling with the folks that saw our flashy bling! Thanks again to Be the Difference Foundation and Medical City Dallas for providing creative and fun ways for us to raise awareness of ovarian cancer!
